The Cinque Terre: A Journey to the End of Dreams.

Who hasn’t dreamed of strolling through colorful villages perched on steep cliffs, left breathless by the beauty of the landscape? The Cinque Terre is a bit like that. A concentrated dose of magic where untamed nature meets millennia of history.

I have to say that after a nearly 11-hour trip, we were exhausted, but we still managed to make our way to Riomaggiore. Unfortunately, we were turned away by a police officer because the town was already packed with cars.

We headed to our lodging, the Antiche Terre Hotel. We relaxed; some of us took a nap.

Early in the evening, we took a stroll around Levanto to walk along the beach before heading to Café del Mar on the square for dinner.

The next day, we decide to check out the trains that run through the Cinque Terre from La Spezia. The train ticket costs €18.20 per person for the day.

Manarola and Riomaggiore: the twins

Manarola and Riomaggiore are often considered the “twins” of the Cinque Terre. These two closely linked villages are distinguished by their colorful houses and narrow alleys. Hidden treasures await around every corner.

We start with Riomaggiore, the gateway to the Cinque Terre, and take a stroll along the cliffside path lined with stairs and railings. Nestled in a small valley, this gem of Liguria is renowned for its authentic charm and vibrant colors.

We take the train back to Manarola and spend a little time there—just long enough for a drink—then hop back on the train to head to Monterosso al Mare and enjoy the beach.

Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages

It’s often considered the queen of the Cinque Terre. Located at the western end of the national park, it offers a blend of historic charm, sunny beaches, and a lively atmosphere.

Vernazza: the postcard view

Vernazza is the postcard image that comes to mind when we think of the Cinque Terre. Its small harbor, surrounded by colorful houses, is truly enchanting. We wander aimlessly, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere of the place and, above all, the beautiful sunset unfolding before us. The sun reflects off the facades of the houses, bathing everything in a golden glow. We stop for dinner, and after the sun has set, we take the train back home.

The Cinque Terre—and indeed all of Italy—are so much more than just a tourist destination. It’s a journey to the heart of oneself, an experience that leaves lasting memories. I hope this story has inspired you to discover these little corners of paradise. It’s a destination that blends breathtaking landscapes, from the Dolomites to the beaches of Polignano. A treasure trove of history, art, and architecture spanning millennia. A cuisine rich in flavor and fine wines. We embraced la dolce vita at times—strolling through the streets for no reason, stopping for a coffee or a glass of prosecco.

Well, this is where our Italian road trip comes to an end. The return trip will take us through Switzerland and its famous tunnel—a journey that will take us nearly 13 hours, but with memories etched in our minds for a lifetime.
