The Idyllic Schœlcher

Sandra's parents dropped us off in Schoelcher so we could visit the family. We ran right into a traffic jam when we arrived in the capital, Fort-de-France, so it took us a long time to get there.
This former fishing village is the family’s birthplace.

Schoelcher, located near Fort-de-France, offers a peaceful retreat after passing through the bustling capital. Today, it’s a college town, home to several universities. Among others, there are schools of law, economics, social sciences, and the College of Arts.

We spent a few hours with his uncle and aunt and had lunch at the family home.

I learn about their story, and memories come flooding back. Later in the afternoon, we spend some time on the beach before a friend and his uncle drop us off by boat at the Fort-de-France ferry terminal, near the cruise terminal.

Fort-de-France in sight!

We take the shuttle to complete our journey to Les Trois-Îlets and spend the rest of the evening with some of Sandra’s acquaintances. We have dinner at L’Annexe in the Creole village.

Christmas Eve

We spend a little while at the beach before heading back to get ready for Christmas. Noémie, Sandra’s mom, cooked up some local delicacies for us. Champagne and, above all, rum flowed freely during this festive evening, and her son finally opened the wonderful gifts he’d received from Santa.

The evening wears on, and the exhaustion from the night before catches up with us. We spend Christmas Day simply with family—it was a day of well-deserved rest before resuming our scheduled activities and visits for the day. It’s worth noting that we’ve had a few rain showers over the past two days, alternating with sunny weather—though it hasn’t been unpleasant… at least not yet.
