The Market in Teror and Puerto de las Nieves

On Sunday, while visiting a market, we discovered a village nestled on the slopes of a hill, with houses featuring unique balconies that seem to come from another era. Time has flowed over it like water sliding down a mountain—a timeless village.

Local products and the famous Mojo sauce

At the market, we found local products, such as Mojo sauce, typical of the Canary Islands—the kind of sauce that accompanies roasted and salted Canarian potatoes, known as patatas Mojo. It’s a red sauce made primarily from very mild Canarian chili peppers; I’d say similar to red bell peppers, with a bit of paprika and wine vinegar, as well as a green version made with green chili peppers and parsley. It’s the kind of recipe that’s impossible to recreate outside the islands.

Aside from this sauce, which I absolutely had to mention, you’ll find other local products here, such as bread, chorizo, blood sausage, jams, cheeses, clothing, and more…

History and Heritage of Teror

Teror, a village located not far from Arucas, is home to the famous Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino, dating back to 1767. This village is said to be a place of pilgrimage for the entire island, as Nuestra Señora del Pino is the patron saint of Gran Canaria.

A Stop in Arucas and Its Neo-Gothic Architecture

We strolled around for a good two to three hours before hitting the road again toward Puerto de las Nieves. We made a stop in Arucas because we spotted a neo-Gothic cathedral from the road. We were so hungry that we only stayed there for a brief moment.

From what little I’ve read about it, this cathedral wasn’t originally a cathedral at all. It was a 17th-century church. Later, it was rebuilt in a 20th-century style. It houses treasures such as works by the famous Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana, as well as Italian sculptures and Flemish paintings.

The harbor is located on the other side of the island, which allowed us to enjoy a sunset—the first of this trip. Since the wind was so strong and our parking lot was set to close at 8:30 p.m., we headed back.
